  4.     At first the growing generic drug-industry scandal was
  5. limited to a few unscrupulous newcomers. But last week the
  6. Government's probe of substandard generics struck an industry
  7. leader, Bolar Pharmaceutical of Copiague, N.Y. The Food and Drug
  8. Administration said that it intends to withdraw its approval of
  9. Bolar's generic version of Dyazide, the top-selling brand-name
  10. hypertension drug. Reason: the FDA says it can no longer be sure
  11. that the generic is biologically equivalent to its brand-name
  12. counterpart. After reviewing Bolar's records, the FDA found that
  13. the company had submitted two batches of its drug for approval
  14. in 1987. Only one passed the equivalency test, but it is unclear
  15. which version reached the market. Bolar claims that only the
  16. effective generic is in drugstores.
